If the task force is successful in arresting Arizona's light pollution problem, the state could end up as the home base for a 600-inch aperture telescope the largest in the world that will cost between $100 million and $200 million.

The biggest telescope in the country measures 200 inches; the biggest one in the world is 240 inches. The two leading site candidates are Mount Graham, about 60 miles east of Tucson, and the island of Mauna Kea, Hawaii. Light pollution control will be a significant factor in deciding where the telescope goes, Crawford said. In March, the Mesa City Council passed a measure requiring outside lights to be aimed, shielded or filtered, prohibiting searchlights used for advertising and providing for use of low-glare lighting wherever possible. Most of those practices already were in effect before the ordinance made them mandatory.

The skies viewed from Kitt Peak are 25 percent brighter than if there were no cities around, Crawford said. "We can tolerate that, but if it gets significantly worse, we'd have real serious problems." By MARIE DILLON Cox News Service MESA, Ariz, You've heard of air pollution, water pollution, even noise pollution. Now you've got light pollution to worry about. It sounds like a threat about as serious as light beer, but it is a menace to stargazers and taxpayers alike. And it's serious enough to prompt 13 Arizona communities so far to pass laws to prevent it.

Light pollution isn't harmful in the sense that air or water pollution are, but it interferes with astronomers' nighttime observations and costs consumers millions of dollars in wasted energy costs, says Dr. David Crawford, an' astronomer at Kitt Peak National Observatory (which is about 35 miles southwest of Tucson) and chairman of the American Astronomical Society's Committee on Light Pollution. "Picture a lightbulb outside at night generally, some fraction of that light is going up instead of down," he said. "That light is just wasted. It's not doing anyone any good.

That wasted light is what we call light pollution." The light that goes up in the air scatters around, bounces off dust and particles in the atmosphere and floats down kind of like rain, he said. That scattered light is what makes a city "glow" from a distance. Wasted light from a used car lot as far away as the Phoenix area can interfere with astronomical work being done at Kitt Peak. To call attention to the problem, a lobbying group called the Kitt Peak Task Force was formed to encourage cities in Maricopa County, which encompasses the VIDAL SASS00N SHAMPOO 1.59 2.89 Value ALPHA KERI OIL EXTRA SPECIAL 3.49 Special Palmer-Johnston Roral Co. 753-3601 "villagt Floral Shoppo 759-4073 Graham's Florist 759-8321 Uilawood Flowors 758-2711 Tho Violet Shoppo 758-2765 Longview Flower Shop 758-7541 Scott's Flower Shop 753-2141 I 'Spha I ft len I Our pharmacies are now completely computerized!
